As a busy mom of 11, the beginning of a school year can be super intimidating.  While it is such an exciting time, there are also tons of emotions, viruses spreading from who knows where, and restless nights for both parents and children.  As we continue our Back to School with Essential Oils series, we will be discussing several oils that will help support our bodies to balance out many of these concerns.

Digestive Support – DIGIZE

This unique, yet powerful blend is made up of 8 different essential oils to support the digestive system.  We all know without a doubt, the dreaded tummy yuck can hit us hard.  Our family has used this particular oil (often paired with Peppermint), to support our bodies during this time of discomfort.  Our now 4 year old (he was 2 when he discovered his love for this oil), uses this as his “go-to” oil when his little tummy is not cooperating with him.  Our favorite way to use this is to apply a drop or two directly on the stomach (dilute equal drops with carrier oil).  As a general guide, we rub clockwise to help encourage things along, and counterclockwise to do the opposite.  We apply as often as needed, or until we get the desired results.  Other ways we use this blend is by rubbing the Vita Flex points on the feet or directly inhaling a drop or two in the palm of hands.  We also use the Digize Vitality oil in a capsule (2-3 drops, then topped with a carrier oil), a drop added to a beverage, or directly under the tongue for fast absorption.

Calm/Relaxing Support – LAVENDER

This gentle oil is so versatile, it’s known as the “Swiss army knife” of essential oils.  My motto is, when in doubt, use Lavender!!  Lavender oil is one of the more commonly known oils, because it is in so many products including shampoos, lotions, soaps, detergents, cleaners, and so much more.  It is also a key ingredient in many of Young Living’s products.  While Lavender is commonly used as a relaxing agent, we love it for irritated skin, boo-boo’s, seasonal discomforts, and as a bath soak for a spa-like atmosphere, just to name a few.

Create an Atmosphere for Learning with these Essential Oils

Place a drop or two on the back of neck, wrists, feet, or wherever you may need the support for a calming atmosphere.  You can also add 4 drops with 1 cup of Epsom salts (this will help evenly distribute the oil) in bath water to wind down a stressful day, or place a few drops on your pillow at bedtime for a blissful night’s rest.

Energizing/ Focus/Muscle Support – PEPPERMINT

Peppermint is a fresh, uplifting scent that we are all familiar with.  The power of Peppermint oil can be quite refreshing as you inhale a drop to boost your day, or to gain a pick me up in the busy-ness of your afternoon.  For years, teachers have used peppermint candies during testing times to help students stay focused and retain information they’ve studied for.  Skip the peppermint candies and add a drop of Peppermint oil to a cotton ball placed in a ziplock baggie to inhale during those times. Other options would be to inhale directly from the bottle, add a drop to a diffuser necklace to inhale as needed, or place a few drops in the diffuser if you have access to that in your classroom.

Peppermint oil is considered a “hot” oil, because of its cooling/tingly effect when applied to the skin.  This makes it perfect when rubbed on sore muscles after gym class or before/after game night.  Applying a carrier oil will help reduce the cooling sensation if your skin is sensitive.  It is important to keep Peppermint oil away from your eyes, so remember to use with caution.  In the event you do get it too close or even in the eyes, you can just continue to apply a carrier oil around the eye until the irritation is gone.  DO NOT use water!!!  Water and oils do not mix, so it will only cause more of a cooling sensation than relief.

A few other ways we love to use Peppermint oil is for digestive support, achy discomforts, and  respiratory support.  One of our favorite diffuser blends is Peppermint, Lavender, and Lemon!
